You may be new to farming – one of the first things you’d need is an electric fence. To help you purchase one, we’ve run through several points. Keep reading.
Power Type
What type of power would be powering the fence? There are two options to do this – AC and DC currents. AC currents are powerful, so the fence would be hard to cross. An option that uses DC currents would need a large battery. You’d likely be able to install DC fences yourself; they are the more affordable of the two as well.
Installation
As mentioned, you’d need to get someone to install AC fences. It would cost a lot to hire a professional. Hopefully, the store you’re buying from would send someone to install the wires.
If multiple shops offer this service, make note of which would do the installation as fast as possible.
Voltage
Now that you’ve figured the type of current that would power the contraption, make note of how much voltage would be produced. Fences that don’t produce much charge would be able to keep small animals away. But if you’re going to be using the contraption for cattle, you’d need considerable voltage.
Depending on the breed of cattle you have, how strong of a fence you’d need would differ. Some are bigger and stronger than others. They might be more aggressive than other breeds too.
Insulation
To prevent an accident from taking place, you would place an insulator at the end of each electric wire. The thing is, there are multiple types of insulation and you can’t use just anything. You’re advised to ask the sales clerk if your fence kit doesn’t specify.
How much insulation you’d have to attach would differ too. Make sure that you add enough and not just a little – the current could get too strong otherwise.
Warranty
You’d want what you bought to last a while. One way you’d be able to do this is by purchasing an electric fence kit that has an extensive warranty. Do your research on the options available so that you get the best coverage possible. Usually, pricey kits come with the best coverage.
Distance Between Wires
How much distance is between the wires? If there is a large gap, animals would be able to squeeze through the fencing. You’d want an option that would have the least distance between wires as possible. Know that fencing kits that have less distance between wires would also be the most affordable.
Final Thoughts
There is a lot to consider if you want to buy an electrical fence. From the countless things discussed, the most important is whether you’d be picking an AC or DC unit up. If it’d be AC, a lot of voltage would be produced. However, you’d need to get someone to install the contraption for you. Make sure that you get an extended warranty with your purchase too. This would prevent cash from being flushed down the drain.
