House rendering is something that can instantly uplift the appearance of your house. It can be used in many different designs. It is a versatile system for treating the external envelope of your house. There are many different types of rendering systems as well. You can select them depending on the construction material of your walls, budget, appearance, convenience and maintenance required over the years.
Render is the first coat of plaster that is applied to the external surface of your house. This may be a brick, concrete, wood or stone surface. Conventionally, this was done by creating a concrete mixture. This was not a long lasting option and it is not very appealing as well. You can still do a cement rendering and paint over it if you are on a budget. However, there is more routine maintenance when compared to other rendering systems. The only reason it was used is to cover the brickwork as a form of protection. There are mineral renders which are cement based render with a mix of polymer that increases the flexibility. It also allows this external layer to breathe. This is also a very affordable option. But you will need to add a layer of protection to this if you live in high humid areas. Otherwise, the water can seep into the wall because of the porosity of this render.
Acrylic rendering systems are more water resistant and provide more flexibility when compared to a traditional render. An acrylic resin is used in this instance. However, it is not as environmentally friendly as the other rendering options in the market. It is not as breathable as the other options as well which carries a risk of algae formation on the outside walls. There may be certain issues with dampness in the interior of the house. In this case, you can go for a breathable but still flexible rendering system like silicone. It doesn’t require a lot of maintenance and it is resistant to water as well. The drawback of this system is the cost. There is an initial investment that is quite high but there is the added benefit of its long lifespan and low maintenance costs as well. So you need to weigh the pros and cons of the silicone render before you select it for your house. However, just like the acrylic render, it is not environmentally friendly.
Monocouche is another rendering system that is formulated with polymer and uses a mesh as well. This is another option to consider that is in the same class as silicone rendering. One of the oldest rendering systems is lime. It gives a classic appearance to the house and it is a breathable layer as well. It is used in many older buildings but you will need to work with an expert if you are going with this option. They need to know the right technique in applying the lime and getting the mixture exactly right. This is also quite a costly rendering system.
